Projects/Portfolio - House VD Heever
The brief to our architect.
Our stand has a panoramic view over the lagoon but is also very steep. The brief to the architect was therefore to optimize the view and to create a big enough living area on one level where we could park the car, sleep, eat and live without any stairs. We also provided a list of other requirements like 4 bedrooms, wine cellar, study etc. which could be located on other levels.
Architects ability to interpret our brief.
The end result after a few consultations was a house that exceeded our wildest expectations. All four bedrooms have lagoon views and each bedroom has an en suite bathroom. The architect, knowing the weather conditions in Knysna better than us, also added a “winter verandah” which turned out to be the most utilized area in the house. We are more than 100% happy with the end product as we eventually got more than what we had hoped for.
Architects delivery and service
Brymer & Associates delivered a very professional service in time and at a mutually agreed fee. The service extended well beyond normal architectural services. Attention to fine details like the position and type of lighting was absolutely invaluable. Advice on selecting the right building contractor as well as suppliers of built in kitchen units and cupboards proved to be based on experience and quality and provided us with an end product that we are extremely proud of. No compromises were made to accommodate builder’s errors or to achieve the desired aesthetic elements which were sometimes difficult to construct.
The livability of the house
This is the fourth house that I have built and it is by far the most livable house of them all. (It is also the only house that the architect’s team was involved in all aspects!) The fact that guests (and children) have their own area with a little kitchenette and other amenities makes it very easy to entertain and accommodate guests. The ease of movement, all on one level, between the garage and the main living area is a major plus point.
Other thoughts on the client architect relationship.
No house is complete until it is properly furnished. The architect introduced us to the best interior designers who translated our taste and requirements into a beautifully furnished dwelling. Once again the architect played a crucial role in assisting with the choice of colors, floor coverings etc. We believe that the fact that the architect’s team was allowed to play a leading role in all the aspects of the process, to create a harmonious whole, was the recipe for success.
Overall we have had a wonderful experience in building our dream house which we could never have achieved without the professional guidance and inputs from Brymer & Associates.
